Changing the Transportation Paradigm

ImageZED Power Corporation and its international affiliates are privately held companies which own, develop, and license the patent protected ZED engine Intellectual Property. The company is headquartered in Canada.

For over a century, global trade and commerce has been dependent on cheap petroleum fuel, burned by inefficient engines. This demand for petroleum fuel is now so high that 25% of all petroleum ever consumed has been in the last 10 years. Unchanged however, 95% of the petroleum is still burned by internal combustion engines that are less than 20% efficient. Of the $2 Trillion of petroleum burned annually, transportation related engines use 60% of it. A permanent global depletion is expected to start by 2015, and cause a sharp rise in the price of petroleum fuel. No new reserves are anticipated. Oil drilling disasters are becoming more probable as oil drilling moves to ecologically sensitive areas such as the Gulf of Mexico. Global warming concerns and carbon based pollution are also bringing the current transportation paradigm era to an end. A major part of any petroleum crisis solution is to find a new engine to power transportation.

Ideally, the new engine would have the same power with fewer or no emissions, better fuel economy, and be built for the same cost as a conventional engine. To preserve current manufacturing infrastructure and chassis design investment, the new engine must fit current vehicles. To date however, no electric, fuel cell or other alternate engine can achieve these standards at an economically viable cost.

Designed AFC (All Fuel Capable), ZED engines are derived from current piston and rotary engine design so they can be made in current assembly plants and installed in existing vehicles. The ZED engine is a unique solution based on engine heat management to increase operating efficiency. Compared to a conventional engine where 70-80% of the combustion energy is discharged as waste heat through the exhaust and radiator, the ZED engine scavenges combustion heat and converts it to mechanical work. This break-through bottom-cycle design is designated "Edber-Cycle". ZED engines are designed for installation in current production vehicles without body or chassis modification. Unlike any other green-tech engine, they can be produced in current engine assembly plants at a cost equal to, or less than, conventional engines.

The ZED engine is fully scalable from lawn mower to train locomotive in size, so it can replace virtually any conventional engine in any use. The company is anticipating the production of ZED powered vehicles in the near future, as well as portable power generators and other small engine applications.
